GoPro has unveiled the latest in a long-line of high-end action cameras. The GoPro Hero 10 Black is an updated design of the GoPro Hero 9, but packs in better and more powerful brains.
The updated version of the company’s custom processor, called the GP2 is primal to the new camera’s capabilities, something we’d wish to have on the DJI Osmo Action that we reviewed a while ago. This has not only enabled high frame-rate recording at high resolutions but also better stabilization and higher speed on all-around performance.
GoPro Hero 10 Specs
- 23MP GP2 Chip with Improved Performance
- 5.3K60/4K120/2.7K240 Video, 23MP Photos
- New Front Display/Rear Touchscreen
- Cloud Connected, 1080p Live Streaming
- Enhanced Low-Light Performance
- HyperSmooth 4.0 Image Stabilization
- 33′ Waterproof without a Housing
- Time-Lapse & Night-Lapse, 8x Slo-Mo
- Built-In Flip-Out 2-Prong Mount
- 1720mAh Capacity Battery
The camera can shoot at an incredible 5.3K resolution at 60 frames-per-second or 4K resolution at a massive 120 frames-per-second. That means 4K resolution 4x slow-motion video. Alternatively, if you want to go slower, there’s 2.7K resolution at a 240 frames-per-second (or 8x).
This is as a result of a new 23.5-megapixel camera sensor. Additionally, you are also able to grab 15.8 megapixel still frame grabs from a 5.3K video.
For still photography, the Hero 10 Black shoots 23-megapixel in Burst mode, Night photo mode, SuperPhoto and RAW.
Like its predecessor, the Hero 10 features HyperSmooth technology which is – essentially – advanced in-camera electronic stabilization. This means exceptionally smooth, almost gimbal-like – footage even when you are in motion. For instance, running with it in your hand or mountain biking on rough terrain.
Here is the catch; you can’t use both the latest HyperSmooth feature and the highest frame-rate recording options at a go. However, it does work in the 4K/60 setting, so you can still get very sharp, fast footage with it switched on.
Besides the features mention above, GoPro has also made the lens cover more durable and hydrophobic, meaning that when it gets wet, water will glide off it quicker than previous versions to ensure your footage isn’t marred by big drops of water on the glass.
In addition, GoPro has an updated in-camera horizon levelling. The company has increased the tilt limit by 18-degrees: from 27-degrees in the Hero 9 to 45-degrees in the Hero 10, when shooting up to 4K/60, or 2.7K/120.
What’s more?
It can be used in webcam mode if you want to, using the front screen to frame your shoot. Plus, live streaming image quality has also been improved.
There are more additional benefits to the GP2 processor and the new sensor. Like, improved low light performance where noise is visibly lower in those less-than-ideal lighting conditions.
All said, the GoPro Hero 10 is a pretty big spec bump over the Hero 9. And one that could convince previous buyers to upgrade and new buyers to consider this option. It keeps the same design, including the built-in mounting arms and uses the same battery too.
