About the Vitamix 5200 Blender
As mentioned, the Vitamix 5200 was released in 2007 as part of the company’s C-series family of blenders. At the time, it was released as an advanced version of the Vitamix 5000 mode, which was both bulky and a little dated.
Yes, in summer 2022 we’re reviewing a kitchen appliance that’s 15 years old. Despite the time difference, the Vitamix 5200 remains one of the popular blender options for folks looking for an easy-to-use blender with big blades and a powerful motor that will last many years to come. Up its sleeve, this blender packs a 2.0 horsepower motor, which is strong enough to crush the driest of grains and nuts. You can also use it as a coffee grinder, and without even saying it, you can use it to crush ice.
As with all consumer electronics, a few compromises here and there are common, and for a 15-year-old kitchen appliance, we aren’t surprised. Unlike modern blenders like the Blendtec Professional 800 Blender, it doesn’t feature a pulse setting; instead, it features a handy dial for switching between the 10 variable speed settings.
How tall is the Vitamix 5200? Well, this is another drawback of this blender, which goes down to storage and not performance. Measuring 8.8 x 7.2 x 20.5 inches, the 5200 is still a bulky appliance (at least by today’s standard), and it can be a little difficult fitting into small kitchen drawers, so it’s better left on the countertop. Not a bad idea, it looks great on your kitchen countertop next to other modern kitchen appliances.
What we Like:
A Self-Cleaning Blender
Like most Vitamix blenders, the Vitamix 5200 has a self-cleaning function, and that’s quite handy. All you have to do is fill the blender with warm water (not hot water) and dish soap, then set the motor to its highest setting.
It does the cleaning seamlessly, by creating a strong vortex that cleans the blades and the container. After 10 to 30 seconds, you can rinse it with water thoroughly and let it dry.
Powerful motor and stainless-steel blades
A high-end blender like this better be long-lasting. And the Vitamix doesn’t disappoint at all, thanks to very hardened stainless steel blades that will endure the tough blending functionalities you’ll want to do. No matter what you’ll be blending, may it be dry nuts or grains, this Vitamix blender is up to the task.
The stainless steel blades are rotated by a powerful motor, rated at 2 HP which is equivalent to 1500 watts. It powers the blades to rotate at 37000 RPM, thus crushing any ingredient thrown inside. The base is equipped with a cooling system and thermal protection system to automatically shut down the blender in case of overheating.
A versatile, easy-to-use blender
The Vitamix 5200 comes with useful control settings that include a dial to control the 10 variable speeds, a high/low variable switch, and a handy on/off switch. These controls are easy to blend various ingredients by using the high mode for heavy ingredients, and is ideal for blending medium ingredients for your recipes.
It can also blend smoothies and grind coffee beans, and even be used to make hot soup or ice cream, making it one of the most versatile blenders around. The blender’s sizable pitcher also makes it good for blending both big and small batches.
What we don’t like:
Quite Expensive
High-performance blenders don’t come cheap due to their quality, efficiency, features, and durable materials. The Vitamix 5200 was released several years ago and packs solid features including durable stainless steel motors, which attracts a higher price tag than the average blenders in the market but it’s worth the price.
Bulky design and Noisy
Storing the Vitamix 5200 is a little more difficult than you could other blenders like the Vitamix E320 because it’s too tall to fit into-low hanging kitchen drawers. Yes, the large container with a 64oz profile allows for blending of large batches, but you sacrifice storage.
Elsewhere, being a little dated, it’s no secret that the motor produces a lot of noise while in operation. Its noise ranges from 89 to 95 dB depending on the ingredients being crushed.
Should you buy the Vitamix 5200?
The Vitamix 5200 is an outstanding blender, one of the top-selling and popular Vitamix models. All those are thanks to a durable construction that’s built to last for many years to come.
Everything from the self-cleaning feature, durable stainless steel blades, safety during operation, and ease of use point to the Vitamix 5200 being a good companion in your modern kitchen.
