The Asus TUF VG24VQE is one of the most affordable curved gaming monitors, but this 165Hz display certainly has a lot going for it. To start, it’s a 24-inch FHD monitor – one of the best budget gaming monitors, in fact – that won’t set you back more that $200. Unlike other entry gaming monitors out there, this little gaming monitor is accessible to budget gamers who have big dreams of owning their very own 1,920 x 1,080 monitor without having to save and scrimp for a few monitors.
And, with it, you get an extremely versatile monitor that offers impressive gaming features including adaptive sync technology. One of the best things about this 1080p gaming monitor is that it even offers a 1ms response time and Asus’ proprietary Extreme Low Motion Blur feature that makes gaming even better.
Combine its 1080p resolution and ergonomics with three thin bezels, a sturdy base that’s easy to install, adaptive sync and robust build, and you’ve got yourself a fairly high-quality budged gaming monitor.

Design and Features
Like most Asus gaming monitors, the TUF VG24VQE rocks an aggressive style. Sharp edges, sci-fi lines, and angled cuts are present all over the chassis, making for a very practical and mean looking machine. It looks great, even if it doesn’t come with LEDs on the chassis, as you’d find on most high-end gaming monitors. Thankfully, most of the monitor’s styling is relegated to the back of the monitor which you won’t have to look at once you’ve set it up.
The front of the display is clean and minimalist. Besides the slightly chunky bottom lip, the surrounding bezels are quite thin, so you can easily stack a couple of them side-by-side to make one giant screen. The OSD buttons and the power button are stacked behind to the bottom right corner and align nicely with the OSD menus.
The large stand feels extremely sturdy, and offers tilt adjustment, but it lacks pivot and swivel adjustment. There’s a good bit of resistance to the movement, so you’ll need to use a bit of force to make the adjustment which is great as it will prevent accidental movements.
Performance and Picture Quality
Asus pitches the TUF VG24VQE as the ultimate budget gaming monitor for both PC and consoles, and it has the ports support the premise. There is one DisplayPort and two HDMI ports, which is the bare minimum you’d need to connect both the PS5 and Xbox Series X, and a gaming rig.
At the sub-$200 price, we didn’t expect a USB-C port to charge mobile devices, or power a compatible laptop. The BenQ PD3220U DesignVue designer monitor includes two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 3, while the LG 40WP95C-W tops out with the first ever Thunderbolt 4 on a monitor.
The Asus VG24VQE sports a 24-inch 1500R curved VA monitor panel with a 1920 x 1080 resolution, a 165Hz refresh rate (max 165Hz), and a 1ms MPRT response time. It has 350 cd/m2 maximum brightness and a 3000:1, both typical for most VA panels. Asus doesn’t advertise HDR certification with this monitor, which isn’t a big deal as it doesn’t affect performance.
Well, having a 1080p monitor that refreshes at 165Hz is still great, especially at 25 inches or below. These are the kind of monitors you’d get comfortable with at the office, college, and the home office, delivering good color quality, that’s not too sharp like the current crop of 4K displays. You can run most modern titles at high frame rates at this resolution, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to reap its benefits.

The Asus TUF VG24VQE has a fairly decent VA panel onboard, but it is not the best we’ve seen in the market, but one of the best at this price point. The panel can produce up to 70% of the DCI-P3 range but falls short of the target in producing accurate colors.
That’s not to say the colours are bad per se. The VA panel’s is decent as long as you put its trace-free setting to the default 80 settings. There will still be some persistence and very minor overshoot, but it’s better than the default. Also, you can use the monitor’s ELMB feature which works better without sacrificing FreeSync and other settings, but strobing isn’t everyone’s favorite feature.
A point that’s worth mentioning is that this monitor will work even with older cards, newer graphics cards like the RTX 3080 in the Alienware Aurora R14 will eliminate issues like blurred text and intermittent connectivity issues. So, switching over to a newer GPU that can handle this monitor’s features, and you’ll get the maximum performance and value for your money.
Asus TUF VG24VQE Review: Verdict
The Asus VG24VQE marks a successful affordable monitor debut for the TUF brand. This budget Asus monitor succeeds in several key areas: its high refresh rate and the addition of ELMB-Sync means that this display has crisp, smooth gaming at decent frame rates – making it an excellent choice for FPS and competitive play.
Elsewhere, this fast, smooth screen support adaptive sync technology (both FreeSync and G-Sync) and boasts great colour quality. Its contrast is a mixed bag, but it’s still good enough for gaming in that regard and price point.
This screen certainly isn’t perfect. It has good build quality and adjustment, but its feature set elsewhere is scant – the speakers are poor, there are no USB ports and no lighting alongside basic OSD. Its contrast levels aren’t high enough for HDR, but those are the few sacrifices you have to do with at this price range.
Are there any alternatives?
The Asus TUF VG24VQE delivers fast, smooth and crisp gaming thanks to its peak 165Hz refresh rate and improved motion blur technology – it’s hard to find a screen this cheap that’s as versatile and as clear as this display. That to say, available alternatives cost more and offer even better gaming performance and specs.
The Asus TUF Gaming VG289Q is one such monitor, that while costing hundreds of dollars more, packs a 28-inch 4K (3840 x 2160) IPS FreeSync screen and HDR support. The LG 27GL83A-B is yet another great alternative, thanks to its 165Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time and 27-inch QHD IPS display. All this alternative cost almost twice as much as the TUF VG24VQE, but they offer better gaming features.
Should you buy the Asus TUF VG24VQE?
Yes. The Asus TUF VG24VQE is, in many ways, a great 1080p gaming monitor. As a budget FHD monitor, the VG24VQE sits firmly in the budget price category but delivers plenty of value with a favorable price/performance ratio. For entry-level gaming, the Asus TUF VG24VQE is clearly worth checking out.
