The choice of an appropriate knife is next to the quality of food prepared by a professional chef. The knife quality, sharpness notwithstanding, draws the single most important between a delicious meal that will keep the family smiling all the way to the dinner table. We’ve shared our five-cents on various knife sets previously, but the Bluesim Knife Set is among those that are hard to pass by when shopping for your kitchen knife.
The five pieces are:
- Chef’s Knife – Has a triangular blade that ranges 8 inches long. Used for slicing, dicing and chopping. This is the knife that is used the most when preparing meals. Also called a cook’s knife.
- Paring knife – Has a blade that is 3.5 inches long. Probably the second most-used kitchen knife. Used to peel apples and other fruits and vegetables. Also used to slice, dice, and chop foods too small for the chef knife.
- Bread knife – Long knives are used to slice bread without mashing it. Shorter paring knives are used for slicing tomatoes and other soft fruits and vegetables.
- Carving knife – A large knife (between 8 and 15 inches) that is used to slice thin cuts of meat, including poultry, roasts, hams, and other large cooked meats. A carving knife is much thinner than a chef’s knife (particularly at the spine), enabling it to carve thinner, and more precise slices.
- Utility knife – Has a blade around 5 inches long. Smaller than the chef knife and can be used for many purposes in the kitchen.
Care and Safety
Never put your knives in the dishwasher
The harsh chemicals from dishwasher detergent will pit your knives and the prolonged heat from the drying will damage your knives.
Instead, as soon as possible after using your knives, wash them by hand with a mild detergent and hand dry them. Don’t allow the knives to drip dry because moisture will dull your knives.
Always use a cutting board
Wood cutting boards are the first choice however, they are not as sanitary as acrylic cutting boards. Glass cutting boards have been shown to dull your knives, also.
Keep your knives sharp
regularly use a honing steel to maintain the edges on your knives, but learn how to use the honing steel properly. You can also have your knives professionally sharpened.
Don’t store your knives in a drawer with lots of metal objects, such as your kitchen utensil drawer.
Use the correct knife for the task at hand
Don’t use your serrated bread knife for chopping and dicing. Don’t use your boning knife to slice your bread. Instead, use a chef’s knife, also called a cook’s knife or a French knife, for chopping, slicing and dicing.
Use a paring knife for peeling and trimming, and for cutting and slicing small items. A utility knife is great for slicing meat and cheese. A boning knife is for cutting meat and poultry. A fillet knife is a great for cutting fish. And, as you would expect, a bread knife’s best use is cutting bread.
With proper use and care, your knives will last you a long time and will help make your kitchen cutting tasks easier and more enjoyable.

Our Verdict
The packaging is quite nice, particularly if you’re buying this for a gift. As with any good quality knife, you’ll always need to take care of it. Hand wash it, dry it, and keep it away from things that would damage the blade while stored. This is a beautifully crafted set, with a nice weight to it, and good balance. If you want that sharp knife for your kitchen with balanced weight then this is an option you should consider.
