A close cousin to the Canon PIXMA MX522, the Canon Pixma MX922 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer offers all the features that made the MX522 popular, plus enough extras—including enhanced photo qualities, ability to print on optical disks, and better paper handling capacity—to make it worth considering as a home home printer or in the dual role of home and home office printer, and also better placed for sharing in a micro office.
Like the Canon MX522, the MX922 makes it possible for you to print and scan from, as well as scan to, a PC; you can use it as a standalone copier and fax machine; and it can scan to and print from a USB key. It also has the ability to preview images on its three-inch color LCD. This printer supports both Ethernet and Wi-Fi support, a duplexer (for two-sided printing), and both a letter size flatbed and an automatic document feeder (ADF) for scanning.
Performance
A small extra for the MX922 when compared with the Canon MX522 is that its ADF offers a little higher printing capacity, at 35 pages. Notably, it gives users the power to scan in duplex, by turning the paper over to scan the second side. An array of menu commands let it work in combination with duplex printing to copy both single-and double sided originals to your choice of single -or double-sided copies.
Ethernet and Wi-fi connection options let you share the printer easily on a network, but this is a common feature in many printers in the same category. However, unlike the Canon MX522, the MX922 brings forth decent paper capacity, at 250 sheets, which makes it practical for sharing in a typical micro office without having to constantly refill the paper tray.
It also comes with a separate photo paper tray of up to 20 sheets of 4-by-6-inch photo paper, that enables you switch between printing photos and printing on plain paper without having to necessarily swap out the paper in the tray.
Recently I’ve seen yet another convenience on Canon printers, Wireless PictBridge for wireless printing over cameras, but it works only with select Canon cameras. Support for mobile printing is nothing above what we’ve seen in other recent printers, just common AirPrint that merely connect both printer and phone or tablet through a Wi-Fi access. I bet it would be better if you would connect the printer to your phone or tablet directly to each other.
The Canon Pixma MX922’s printing speeds is just Achilles’ heel. It is able to print at a lackadaisical 2.4 pages per minute (ppm). this makes it a little faster than the less expensive Canon MX522,at 2.1 ppm. This is way slower than any number of similarly-priced printers, including for example the Epson WorkForce WF-3540, at 4.5 ppm.
Perhaps making up for the slow speed for business applications is the reasonably fast speed for photos, at a 1 minute 5 seconds average for a 4 by 6. That’s actually way faster than the WF-3340, at 1:12. The Pixma MX922’s output quality are a compensation for slow speeds. graphics quality are at the end of par, but text quality is just a step below top tier for inkjets, with photo quality being in the top tier for low-cost inkjets.
Although it has good photo quality, i suggest that for better photo output, you’d have to move up to far more expensive models designed for professional and near-professional photographers and graphic artists.
Summary
If you always print enough pages so that fast speed is an absolute requirement, for that matter, you’ll want to look elsewhere. However, for most home, home office, and micr office use, the Canon PIXMA MX922 should be fast enough. More important, its output quality, paper capacity, and long list of MFP features—from the duplexing ADF, to the ability to print on optical discs, to the ability to print from or scan to a USB key—will, for most people, more than make up for the relatively pokey speed.
And the overall balance is what makes the Canon Pixma MX922 a cheap alternative to our Editors’ Choice Brother MFCL2700DW, worth a very long look as you shop around.
