Dell has always had a strong footing with its UltraSharp monitors, known for their solid performance and minimalist design. The latest addition to the family, the Dell UltraSharp U2715H, is no different. This 27-inch professional monitors uses an In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel to deliver vibrant colors, accurate grayscale, and an ultra-thin bezel design that can be seamlessly used in a multi-monitor setup.
In fact, you have the choice of ordering the monitor with a single or dual arm mount unit. Moreover, it packs a generous feature set, including multiple video ports, an ergonomic stand and a USB 3.0 Hi-Speed Hub. If your work requires a high degree of color and grayscale performance, the 27-inch UltraSharp U2715H is a prime choice with its QHD (2,560-by-1,440) resolution panel that delivers bold, accurate colors. And it doesn’t cost much.
Design
The Dell UltraSharp U2715H uses an ultra-thin bezel design that is similar to the Dell UltraSharp U2717D’s InfinityEdge (bezel-free) design and is housed in the same gray-and-black cabinet. It is a 27-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) panel with a non-reflective coating, a peak brightness of 350 cd/m2, a 1,000:1 (typical) native contrast ratio, and a 16:9 aspect ratio. It also has a 6-millisecond (gray-to-gray) pixel response and a 60Hz refresh rate. If you need to hook it up to a stand, it has four VESA-compliant mounting holes and is supported by a stand that provides tilt, swivel, pivot, and height adjustments.
On the right side of the bottom edge, there are four function buttons and a Power button. The function buttons are use to control picture settings, with the basic picture presets being (Standard, Multimedia, Movie, Game, Paper, Color Temperature, sRGB, and Custom), as well as controls for Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness as well as two Gamma settings for PC or Mac. Being an entry-level panel, you don’t get complex settings such as 6-Axis-Hue and -Saturation control, the same way you don’t find Blue Light settings.
Ports
For connectivity, all ports are placed on the cabinet rear, facing downward, and there are a pair of DisplayPort inputs (one full size and one mini), two HDMI ports, an audio line out port, and five USB 3.0 ports (four downstream at the back, and one upstream). Bundled into the package, in addition to a monitor and stand, a resource CD, as well as a USB upstream cable and a mini-DisplayPort cable.
Performance
The Dell UltraSharp U2715H delivers an incredibly stunning QHD picture. A 4K aerial photo of the Eiffel Tower was breathtakingly sharp in testing, with exquisite image detail right down into the evening ripples on River Seine. Its color quality is excellent, which is expected of an IPS panel that is able to display accurate colors.
The vibrant colors are as a result of closely aligned red, green, and blue colors into their ideal CIE coordinates. Similarly, gray-scale performance is at par with a typical high-end IPS panel. Despite being a QHD panel, while we have UHD (4K) displays in the market costing almost the same, its colors remain crisp regardless of the viewing angle, and it doesn’t have any perceptible backlight bleed.
For gamers, the panel’s 8-millisecond (gray-to-gray) pixel response won’t suffice for many games, but it isn’t the worst either. I noticed screen tearing while playing GTA V on the PC and while playing Fallout on the XBOX 360. Many gamers will be hard pressed to find graphic solutions to handle 5K gaming, especially with the release of the Pascal-based NVidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphic cards.
If you need to enjoy smooth gaming, the Acer Predator XB271HK offers a few nice features that will appeal to gamers. The unit consumes about 59 watts of power, which is somewhat high for a 27-inch QHD monitor, but not prohibitively so.
The Bottom Line
Whether you’re a Windows user looking for a 27-inch monitor that can be seamlessly used side-by-side, multi-display configuration or have a thing for a near-bezel-free look, the Dell UltraSharp U2715H will not disappoint. With an IPS panel, it delivers incredible color and grayscale performance, can be viewed at wide angles, has a crisp QHD picture, and it has multiple video inputs, a video output and a USB hub. That said, the Asus VG278Q remains our Editors’ Choice, thanks to slid picture quality, affordable price and stellar design.
