Light attracts bugs than anything else, whether it’s your outdoor lighting or the attractive light of an insect killer. If you’re never comfortable being at your backyard because you loathe mosquitoes, and don’t have the energy to keep swatting at flying pests, you’re better off considering the Flowtron BK-40D Electronic Insect Killer. It provides a convenient approach to kill flying insects so you can enjoy the serenity of your yard.
What we like about the Flowtron BK-40D
Setting up the Flowtron BK-40D is pretty straightforward. This is one of those gadgets you just pull out of the shipping box, plug it in to a power source, and it gets to work right away. All you need to do is figure out where to hang it, since it comes with a strong metal look at the top, and the bottom is slightly rounded if you need to rest it on the ground.
For the best performance, it recommended to use a metal hook and secure it to a tree or metal pole, though.
A very attractive design
While the Flowtron BK-40D gets a basic design, it does it in a way that it complements your existing lights. It is a tapered polycarbonate lantern house with a 40-watt ultraviolet bulb and an electrified grid. The grid attracts the bugs, and as they come close, they get zapped.
Some of the insects fall through the bottom of the lantern, while some sticky directly to the light. It doesn’t have any bug trap or tray to be cleaned, and if the bugs stick to the light, you just use a small brush to wipe them away.
An all-night killing machine
In less 30 minutes after switching it on, bugs find the light attractive and the zaps start coming. If you leave it on for around two hours, it will have killed several dozens of mosquitoes and small flying bugs. This zapper covers a large area – up to one acre – so you need to keep it at a good distance from your sitting area. While in operation, it does send zapped insects flying, so if you’re too near the inspect killer, you may be hit by a bug or two.
The bug zapper comes with a cartridge containing octenol, a chemical that readily attracts biting insects, but you really don’t have to use it if you don’t want. In case you need to use it, just attach it to the bottom of the unit, with a single replacement lure lasts about 30 days.
Secure, for the little hands
The Flowtron BK-40D is designed to keep little hands and pets from getting zapped as best as possible, so you don’t have to worry too much. All that is handled by the exterior polycarbonate grid that has very small openings – that are big enough for bugs, but very small for most fingers. Even with the secure design, hang the lantern higher enough so it’s out for reach of children and pets.
What we didn’t like
For those with a smaller yard or patio, the price can be high, you can still buy something like the Hoont Insect Zapper with less coverage at a lower cost. But if you need to cover a larger area, this bug zapper is a worthy investment. Another thing has to be the lightbulb, it is very bright – and it can be too bright for sensitive eyes especially in dark environments. If it gets too bright, simply move it away from your sitting area.
Bottom Line
The Flowtron BK-40D is perhaps the best long-range (up to 1 acre) bug zapper you can get in the market, that kills those annoying flying insects and other bugs effortlessly. It uses an ultraviolet light to attract and zap insects, but the construction is done in a secure way to keep away little fingers and even pets from being zapped. And that’s even more reason to like it.
However, the Flowtron BK-40D Electronic Insect Killer is designed for outdoors use, meaning indoors users can consider the Aspectek Indoor insect Killer, but if you have a serious insect problem, you can certainly use a combination of both to keep you home free of pests.
